What’s Biting Right Now
It’s been a rainy stretch on Charlotte Harbor this past week, and water temps are still sitting in the upper 80s.
The bite has been strongest early, before 9:30 in the morning, or again in the late afternoon. Once the sun gets high and the heat sets in, the fish slow way down.
Redfish
Redfish have started schooling up, with groups of 3 to 6 fish showing up regularly.
Reds in the 22 to 30 inch range have been coming over the rail, with shrimp and cut ladyfish leading the way as the best baits.
These fish get lazy once it heats up, so the move is to slow down and soak cut bait on points and windblown shorelines rather than covering a lot of water.
Speckled Trout
Trout action has been good on the deeper grass flats, especially in Turtle Bay and along the north side of Pine Island Sound.
Snook & Sharks
A few snook and sharks have been mixed into the action as well, keeping things interesting on the flats.
Ladyfish & Jacks
The outside bars of Turtle Bay have been loaded with ladyfish and jacks, good for bending the rod between bites on the bigger targets.

Between schooling redfish, solid trout on the grass flats and a mixed bag of snook, sharks and hard fighting jacks, there’s plenty happening on Charlotte Harbor this September.
