After a few days of rain here in Punta Gorda, the weather is starting to stabilize and temperatures are slowly warming back up. That slight warm-up has made a noticeable difference in the bite around Charlotte Harbor and the surrounding backwaters.

Snook Biting Again After the Cold
The snook bite has started to rebound nicely after the extreme cold we had a few weeks ago. We’re finding good action in deeper water in the canals, where fish are holding and staying comfortable.
Right now, live shrimp is the top producer. The fish aren’t in the mood to chase artificials much yet, so slowing things down and putting live bait right in front of them has been key. Patient presentations are getting the job done.
Cut ladyfish fished on the bottom has also been effective for both snook and redfish, especially around deeper edges.

Redfish in Turtle Bay & Bull Bay
We’re seeing solid redfish activity in Turtle Bay and Bull Bay, particularly in warmer, wind-protected sections. The best areas have been:
- Around oyster bars
- Mangrove points
- Spots with deeper water nearby
Those protected areas are holding warmer water, and that’s where the reds are staging. Cut ladyfish on the bottom has been producing, along with live shrimp when conditions allow.

Trout on the Deeper Grass Flats
Trout action has been steady in deeper grass flats in the 3–5 foot range. When the water warms just a bit more, that bite should only improve.
Best setups for trout right now:
- Popping cork rigs
- Live shrimp
Keeping your bait suspended just above the grass has been the most consistent approach.
What to Expect Fishing Punta Gorda Right Now
As the weather continues to stabilize, we expect the bite in Charlotte Harbor and around Boca Grande to keep improving. The key has been:
- Fishing deeper water during cooler periods
- Targeting protected areas that warm first
- Slowing down presentations with live bait
This transitional period can produce some really quality fish if you adjust to the conditions.
